Golfing in Prague No doubt about it: the Czech Republic’s capital has a lot to offer and is therefore definitely worthwhile to visit. Prague is a sampling of all kinds of architecture ranging from old to new. The old town centre is crowded with tourists, especially in summer. The city’s skyline is impressive. Immediately it becomes clear why Prague is called the city of 1000 towers (this number might be a bit high, but there are definitely many towers). Standing on the bank of the river Moldau, which flows right through the city, you have a splendid view of the Prague Castle (the world’s largest castle according to the Guinness Book of Records) and the basilica of St. Vitus literally towering above it. The elevated castle houses the presidential palace. From above you can see the river Moldau dividing the city in two like a silver ribbon and the many bridges connecting the two parts. Charles Bridge is the oldest, one of the major tourist attractions of the city, a beautiful bridge ornated with about thirty Baroque statues of saints but at the same time blotted by souvenir stalls and the like.
About the same goes for the old town square with the city hall and its famous astronomical clock. However, the city has more to offer than the obvious tourist traps. Culture, for instance. There is music in abundance in the many jazz clubs; not impeded by language barriers. The sale of tickets for one hour concerts, with highlights of all popular classical music, is a booming business, but very attractive.
Still intrigued by the little white ball when visiting Prague? The city offers an interesting option: “an indoor golf course”. The Erpet Golf Centre located on the river just outside the centre features a driving range with ten mats (you hit the ball into a net), several putting greens (with artificial trees and bushes, etc.) and four state-of-the-art golf simulators with all sorts of well and lesser known courses where you can hit the ball like you would do in real life. It is fun to do, play indoor golf on the river Moldau. But oh, that smell of new-mown grass….
