Beloved sandpit of Ernie Els and Tiger Woods
Majlis Course of the Emirates Golf Club in Dubai is 6677 meter long and the beloved sandpit of world’s famous golfers Ernie Els and Tiger Woods. The first weekend of February they played the Desert Classic in Dubai. Lately Dubai is an upcomming tourist attraction. Golfers know the place to be a superb golf destination. The South African Els is record holder in the Desert Classic with three triumphs. The 32-year-old American Woods has one victory less. Woods however won the first weekend of February his second victory in the Desert Classic. He was the absolute number 1 with 274 strokes golf over 72 holes. A total of 14 under par, one stroke better than German Martin Kaymer and two swings better than the South Africans Louis Oosthuizen and Ernie Els.
Specialist in desert golf courses
The American architect Karl Litten designed the Majlis Golf course of the Emirates Golf Club in Dubai in 1988. Litten is a known specialist in the desert courses where the sun burns all year. He also designed golf courses in Tunisia and Egypt in addition to a large number in the United States. From 1989 Dubai hosted the Desert Classic of the European Tour.
All top players agree that the quality of the Majlis Golf course is superb. The course is ranked in the top-100 of the world. Very heavy, yet very fair, so they say. A dozen holes of the flat course have water hazards. And, although the greens are also flat, they still are very difficult.
Luxury
Majlis is the championship course of the Emirates Golf Club, a 18-hole course. Wadi, designed by Nick Faldo, is the other 18-hole course. Besides that Emirates Golf Club also has a par-3 course and a golfacademie. The clubhouse is a kind of Bedouin housing, surrounded by marble walls which reflected sunlight. It’s luxury all over. A greenfee is € 150. In off-peak hours the rates are cheaper, but not much. Due to the popularity of the golf course, it is important to book teetimes in advance. Especially in the peak season (November till February).
