Masterpeace by Gary Player in Sun City
In the third weekend of January 2008 twenty country teams of two lady golfers played at the Gary Player Country Club in South Africa for the third time the World Cup for women. The title was won bij Jennifer Rosales and Dorothy Delasin for the Philippines with 18 under par over 54 holes. South Korea, who was favourite, finished second. The women were facing a 5839 meters course. Gary Player Country Club is a great golf course which welcomes golf tourist from all over the world.
His wife is from Dutch origin, and because of the beautiful Dutch flowers, Gary Player would love to design a golf course in the Netherlands. However the 72-year-old South African golf legend never came to fullfill his wishes and probably it will not happen ever.
No golf course in the Netherlands
Because of the detasted Apartheid, the nine time Majorwinnaar could not work for many years outside his country. And when the racial segregation was over, the booming golf course design industry in Holland was in hands of Dutch architects like Joan Dudok van Heel, Gerard Jol and Alan Rijks.
And even when Gary Player was invited to shine his light on golf course projects, his prices showed to much zero’s. Probably the birth country of his wife shall have to cope with the missing of a golf course with the signature of Gary Player.
Value for money
Gary Player is one hell of a golf course designer. More than 200 golf courses have his signature. His own South Africa has many of his magnificent golf courses situated in splendour nature. His masterpiece is almost next to his front door, the Gary Player Country Club. A top golf course of 6938 meters from the men backtees. The par-5 9th hole, with an island green, is spectaculair.
The Gary Player Country Club is a public golf course in Sun City. This city is known as the cheerful Las Vegas of South Africa, 150 kilometres north of Johannesburg. Anyone who is willing to pay Rand 495, can play eighteen holes on de Gary Player Golf Course. This is less than 45 euros and rather cheap if you compare the course with equal stature in Western Europe and North America. The course manager assumes that the golfers in Sun City probably stay and spend considerably more money in the 24-hour entertainment industy of Sun City or visit the gaming and wildlife in the Pilanesberg National Park.
