Golf Tourism Madeira Increases
The number of rounds played by tourists, on the Madeira Archipelago’s three golf courses in the first three months of the year, grew 17.5% overall, compared to the same period last year. In actual figures, during the first quarter of 2007, 13663 rounds of golf were played on the three golf courses in Madeira, which is 2038 rounds more than during the same period in 2006. This result refers solely to visiting golfers, since it does not take rounds played by members of the three clubs into account.
A breakdown reveals that all three golf courses contributed to this growth: in Clube de Golf Santo da Serra a further 938 rounds were played; in Palheiro Golf a further 628 rounds; and in Porto Santo Golf a further 472.
In spite of the spectacular increase recorded at Porto Santo Golf, corresponding to 123% growth, compared to 2006, results might well have been even better, were it not for the absence of the regular boat service that connects both islands, between 7th January and 15th February.
The outlook for Porto Santo Golf is looking very bright for the next few months, and it is expected that by April the number of rounds played by visiting players will have exceeded the total number of the same rounds played during the whole of 2005.
