Devon and Cornwall: playing golf in Miss Marple’s world
From way back, Devon and Cornwall have been popular holiday destinations for many people but most of all for the British themselves. Touring through the southwestern tip of England explains why. The Gulf Stream brings warmth thus creating an agreeable environment with a noticeable mild climate and subtropical vegetation. The presence of palm trees on the same latitude as Antwerp never ceases to amaze you.
In this part of England, you keep driving into quaint little villages that give you the impression you might run into Miss Marple doing her grocery shopping. It seems as if time has stopped in these parts.
Devon and Cornwall are a golfer’s paradise. One beautiful course after the other. Many courses are situated in a hilly countryside. Both beginners and advanced golfers will find them attractive to play. However, beware: a course like the fancy Bovey Castle Golf Course is enough to make the beginning golfer despair.
Another advantage is that people who have a secret desire to play Pebble Beach in California can save themselves a lot of money. Connoisseurs often compare Thurlestone Golf Club in Devon to the infamous Californian course. The green fee is the major difference. The English course charges 35 euro for 18 holes, whereas on Pebble Beach one has to fork out 450 dollars. .
Our editor Toon van Winden visited five golf courses in Devon and Cornwall. You can read about his experiences on the pages of the courses concerned.
