Red Mountain opened in 2007 and maybe the most dramatic golf course you will find in Phuket. It has a true jungle feel and one of the tightest layouts I played in Thailand. Built on the site of a former tin mine, this course offers extreme elevation changes with magnificent views. There are a number of tee shots with forced carries to narrow fairways and you will definitely rely on your caddy to read these tricky and very deceiving greens.
The opening par-4 is visually stunning but somewhat intimidating. The distinct Red Mountains form the backdrop where your tee shot must be straight on this key-shaped hole. The longer you hit it the narrower the fairway becomes. In my opinion you should leave your driver in the bag and take your chances with a longer approach.
The most strategic hole on the front nine is the 8th. This downhill par-4 is only 275 yards (white tees) but features water on the left and right with a narrow landing area. This might be the ultimate risk/reward challenge for long hitters.
The final three holes are some of the strongest you will find anywhere.
#16 is 275 yards all uphill to a narrow landing area. Stay left to avoid the fairway bunker and large slope. The elongated raised green is angled so make sure your approach shot is not left or it will funnel down a swale to a greenside bunker. The 16th green is the highest point on the course with magnificent views of the valley so take the time for a photograph.
#17 is definitely the signature hole here as your tee shot is 30 meters straight down hill. By now your caddy can pick the club you should use on this majestic par-3.
The 18th hole is a downhill par-5 that requires you to stay short of the pond and creek off the tee. From there you need to stay left of the large pond that runs up the rest of the hole and still avoid the three greenside bunkers.
Red Mountain maybe the most visibly impressive in Phuket but the conditioning is certainly not up to par. The front nine was in better shape but on the back nine there were many bare spots on the fairway that have been recently sanded. Even though the bunkers were deep and soft, I found the greens to be shaggy.
The package rate is 7100 baht for 18 holes with cart and caddy + gratuities (around US$235 or 210 Euros) which I found expensive seeing that it did not include any food or beverages. The Pro Shop was sparse with little selection. Plus, there was no GPS on the power carts and no distances on the sprinkler heads, but they do have 100 and 150-yard markers.

for sure still the best golf course in Phuket - played several- including Blue Canyon, which need some renovation, and came back to Red Mountain again. Yes fairways are soft, so less rolling than other places, but its wet so all ok. great maintained, good caddies, a bit expensive, but worth it.

A very nice and spectacular course in an area with old mines. A lot of up-and-down on and between holes so buggies are mandatory. It’s a varied and fun course, but it’s not an easy course so the experience for players with high handicaps might be different, i.e. it’s maybe a bit too challenging? For the better golfer though, it’s most likely the best course on Phuket. Caddies generally good. Nice locker rooms, good shop and a nice restaurant. However almost always quite empty in restaurant. The greenfee incl buggy is quite steep though!
